Militant Jews arrested in anti Soviet protest
Almost 700 militant American Jews were arrested in a mass protest near the Soviet Embassy led by Rabbi Meir Kahane of the Jewish Defense League. About 2,500 participants from New York, New Jersey, and Philadelphia joined a rally on the Ellipse and a sit in near the embassy.

Woodford man killed crossing Route 9
A 55-year-old Woodford man Ralph DeForge was struck and killed while crossing Route 9 on foot near the Bennington Woodford line. The driver, Audrey Weber of Bridgeton New Jersey, was not charged as the investigation continues. DeForge died of head and internal injuries at Putnam Memorial Hospital.

Dyers quieted by stack extension suspension order
Bennington selectmen suspended the shutdown of Catamount Dyers boiler for an indefinite period after a 20 foot smokestack extension and noise abatement measures reduced noise. An acoustical engineer tested near homes Friday night and an air compressor is expected to further cut noise and vibration. A report on the tape recordings will be released in about 10 days. The move follows a meeting with town officials, plant managers, and the acoustical expert.
