Fire Destroys Cracker Barrel Ski Shop and Legion HQ
Five towns battled a blaze that wiped out Woody's Cracker Barrel ski shop and the American Legion headquarters in South Londonderry. The fire broke about 6 a.m. and by 6:30 the building collapsed into the West River on VT 100. Firefighters saved little stock, but Emery Woodall recovered three filing cabinets. Origin suspected in cellar where ski equipment stored. frostbitten conditions hampered crews.

Village Meeting Tonight Debates Over 60000 Water Sinking Fund
Bennington Village voters convene tonight at 8 p.m. in the elementary school to decide the use of a $60,000 water sinking fund with interest. Trustees push using the fund to cut indebtedness and buy a new fire truck, while water commissioners seek improvements to the village water system. If Article 6 passes, Article 7 will test voter approval of a new tax rate under alternate budgeting. Balloting on eight articles continues tomorrow at the same location.

Arthur R. Rickert 86 longtime Bennington Village water board member and former town selectman died Saturday morning after a sudden illness. He was born Oct. 14, 1880 in Bennington and worked 54 years as a machinist and dyer at Cooper Machine Shop. Survived by his wife Mabel and two children, memorials to St. Peter's Church. Funeral services Tuesday at St Peter's Church with calling hours tonight.

A 106 car freight train bound for Boston derailed on Broadway in downtown Albany. Two cars carried explosive material and a ruptured tank held toluene. firefighters cooled the scene to neutralize danger. No injuries were reported as patrons were kept safe and nearby facilities advised.

Vietnamese Viet Cong Attack Repulsed Near Saigon
U S Infantry Division forces repulsed a Viet Cong assault about 30 miles north of Saigon after a six hour battle in which the Communists suffered about 224 dead. The American unit counted 5 killed and 34 wounded with about 2 500 Viet Cong attacking a 100 man element. Fire from armored vehicles and 50 caliber guns plus gunship air support drove the attackers off at dawn.
