Catamount Dyers of Bennington has not decided whether to shut part of its dyeing operation tonight as town officials press to curb noise. Selectmen ordered the large boiler on Division Street closed from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. until noise levels are deemed satisfactory, with affidavits available for residents to urge legal action. Attorney John H. Williams II said a final decision would come by 8 p.m. and noted the issue is complex while the company evaluates the situation. A petition signed by 98 nearby residents was presented to the selectmen requesting town action.
