Vermont governor backs hatchery project for Lake Champlain
Gov Richard Snelling urged feasibility studies for a Lake Champlain hatchery while state officials pressed to secure roughly 30 000 to fund initial data and expert testimony. The plan, backed by Fish and Game and UVM, aims to revive coldwater fisheries with species like salmon lake trout and steelhead rainbow angling. Snelling also rebutted Abenaki nation claims, saying state power to grant nationhood does not exist and that the issue must be addressed by courts or the legislature. He will probe Indian status at the April 6 Indian Commission meeting in Swanton and decide how many and who may be recognized as bonafide Abenakis. Hoag, an alleged Abenaki and former Tribal Council leader, has been rejected by both the Tribal Council and the commission due to questions about his genealogy and legitimacy.
