Portsmouth Naval Shipyard to be modernized at $60 million plan

Pentagon will invest 60 million dollars over five years to upgrade Portsmouth Naval Shipyard enabling it to become the North Atlantic main overhaul and conversion yard. Union leaders say modernization may raise efficiency and competitiveness, though current employment at about 7,000 is not expected to grow. Areas slated include crane rail system power plant inside machine shop and berth dredging to handle 1980s ships.
