O'Brien attacks party VI blasting its direction as Democrats face pressure to reform or face political decline. Critics warn sweeping changes are needed to regain public support and avert electoral losses.
Leo OBrien, the unsuccessful Democratic gubernatorial candidate, told the Vermont Labor Council Committee on Political Education in Montpelier on Sunday that his party must change its approach or risk not winning another statewide office this century. He urged reforms during the speech.
A public hearing on abortion reform marks Vermont's 1971 debut as lawmakers return for the 10th week. The House Judiciary Committee sponsors the measure allowing abortion in licensed hospitals through 20 weeks or later if the mother’s health is at risk. Senate panels address conservation commissions and delaying the 1970 criminal code revision while discussing state aid to parochial schools. He criticized the draft impact statement for under evaluating the Mackenzie Valley route and the risks of tanker traffic from Valdez.
Awami League leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman seized control of East Pakistan defying martial law and urged mass resistance. President Yahya Khan flew to Dacca to seek a resolution as Rahman announced 35 directives, suspending central tax collection and extending the strike, with riots claiming hundreds of lives.
