McCarthy’s confident tone astonishes press crowds while Kennedy, 42, faces scrutiny from allies and rivals amid Democratic nominating dynamics and possible paths to the ticket.
United Press International reports that Robert F Kennedy weighs returning to the race against Lyndon Johnson and Eugene McCarthy. He plans a decision within a week while a flood of letters and calls from supporters floods his Capitol Hill office. Most responders favor his candidacy, but key party leaders and state chairs oppose Kennedy, fearing a split. McCarthy vows to stay in, adding Indiana and South Dakota primaries to his schedule as Johnson remains hands off.
Washington report from UPI says most Democratic state chairmen oppose Senator Robert F. Kennedy entering the presidential race and back President Johnson in remaining out of primary campaigns.
Gov Lurleen B Wallace endured two operations in three weeks and remained serious but not critical, doctors said. She was treated for an abdominal infection and an abscess drainage after cancer surgeries, with antibiotics continuing and no new complications reported.
The Panamanian National Assembly voted 30 to 0 to impeach President Marcos A. Robles for violating the Constitution by publicly backing a presidential candidate. A three member commission was appointed to prepare the case within 30 days. Robles has called any suspension by the assembly null.

Philadelphia reports show 44 day strike by Glass Bottle Blowers Association workers halted 95 percent of U S glass container output with 50 000 workers in 86 plants. Talks in Miami Washington and Philadelphia yielded little progress as union and management remained 18 to 20 cents per hour apart. President Johnson eyed Taft Hartley act cooling off.
London reports Spain and Britain will start talks on other topics as scheduled despite not agreeing on how to discuss Gibraltar’s future. Talks begin Saturday with focus on economic cultural matters and European integration notes the Foreign Office.
