Welfare Bill Opposition Testifies Today
Vigorous opposition was expected at a Vermont House Health and Welfare Committee hearing on a sweeping social welfare reform bill. The Vermont Town Officers Association formed Sunday to fight the legislation, and its hired counsel planned to testify. Several Republicans supported the bill, while Westphal and Simpson opposed it. A St. Albans mother of seven urged fairness for welfare recipients, noting her husband has been ill and that she was not always on welfare. Opponents argued ski lift taxes would harm Vermont’s developing ski industry, while supporters cited potential revenue and fairness concerns.
