Eighteen Allied soldiers were killed and 43 wounded as a 200 man Communist unit retreated toward the DMZ after heavy artillery and air bombardment, leaving four bodies. U.S. sources said the Reds hold a safe haven north of the line and that U.S. forces may not fire into that sector unless fired upon. It marked the first attack from the buffer zone since Johnson halted bombing of North Vietnam.
