Rutland Ends BCHS Sabers Dynasty With Late steal

Barry Keefe of Rutland banked a decisive steal from Plante and scored as BCHS Sabers saw their two year Class L state title run end in a 47-45 loss. Rutland, led by Bob Pratt and Rod Phillips, controlled the boards and held off a late BCHS surge.

Group Formed To Hinder Proposed Vermont Welfare Bill

A coalition of about 50 local officials and conservative lawmakers formed to oppose a Vermont House welfare reform bill. Led by Rep. Fred Westphal the group plans to urge the Health and Welfare Committee to block the measure which would centralize welfare oversight under the state and end town control.

Meredith withdraws from Powell race blaming GOP expediency

James Meredith, 33, withdrew as GOP opponent to Adam Clayton Powell in the New York special congressional race, charging the Republican Party failed to keep commitments and acted out of political expediency. He had entered last week with party support and funding promises, which he said were not fulfilled, leading to his abrupt exit. Powell, a Democrat, had held the seat for 23 years amid controversy.

De Gaulle Faces Loss Of One Vote Majority

Paris dispatch reports French riot troops flown to Corsica to prevent violence during a crucial recount of Sunday's elections. The recount could strip Charles de Gaulle's Fifth Republic Alliance of its one-seat absolute majority in the 486 member National Assembly. Interior Ministry said Gaullists held 244 seats with Corsica included, final count awaiting recount.

High Court Rules Speedy Trial Binding on States

The Supreme Court ruled unanimously that state courts must honor the constitutional guarantee of a speedy trial. The decision, in a North Carolina case involving Duke professor Peter Klopfer, held that the right is binding on state authorities and cannot be suspended indefinitely. Justice Warren wrote the opinion with Justices Stewart and Harlan partially in agreement. The ruling marks the first time the speedy trial guarantee applies to the states.

Dorset Woman Injured As Fire Destroys Home

EAST DORSET a Dorset fire damaged the LeDous residence on Dorset Hill Road in a morning blaze that destroyed the house and left Mrs. LeDous with leg injuries after she fell while fleeing with her husband from a second floor porch. Fire officials cited snow and scarce water as factors. the fire, still smoldering at 10 am, ruptured two gas tanks and the home known as the Old McDonald Place was a long standing local property. Mrs LeDous received care in Manchester from Dr Harwood.
