Sap season outlook for Vermont maples mixes risk and hope
Vermont Extension forester Raymond Foulds says this year’s maple health is only average due to a late spring wind damage and a hot August. If 10 to 12 good sap runs occur, a normal season is possible with 8 to 12 gallons per tap and higher syrup yields for some producers using tubing and vacuum.

Expansion of gypsy moths continues across country
NEW YORK The number of leaf eating gypsy moths found outside the infested portions of the Northeast dropped substantially from about 3 400 male moths in 1973 to 410 trapped in 17 states last year. APHIS said defoliation was down but outbreaks remain possible as populations can explode. Moths appeared in five partly infested northeastern states with 111 in Maine 60 in Maryland nine in Delaware six in New York and two in Pennsylvania. Trapping was aided by wet cold June wilt disease virus and the parasite rearing and release program. About 70 000 traps were placed nationwide by APHIS and partners. The gypsy moth is a foreign pest introduced in 1869.
