Admirals press Bucher on Pueblo loss in court inquiry

In Coronado five admirals grilled Lloyd Bucher for five hours in the eight week court of inquiry into the Pueblo seizure by North Korea on January 23, 1968. Bucher stood by his order not to fire as the ship was overwhelmed, insisting it was a seizure not surrender. He admitted tacitly approving a destruction plan for intelligence papers and said he felt completely responsible for the failure to fully destroy them.

Delta Battle Near Saigon Drives Off 57 Viet Cong

U S infantrymen attacked a 300-man Communist force in the Mekong Delta south of Saigon using air strikes and artillery, killing 57 as fighting continued. US losses were five dead and 45 wounded. The battle coincided with a perceived shift to a third offensive phase and a possible Saigon attack next week. B52s bombed approaches to Saigon from the north while US troops pursued the guerrilla unit. Elsewhere in the Central Highlands near Kontum City, 37 North Vietnamese were killed in two clashes with eight American deaths and 43 wounded.
