Vermont Gas Tax Hike Plan Advances at Legislature
The House Ways and Means Committee voted 9 to 2 to raise Vermont’s gasoline tax to eight cents per gallon and to increase the auto purchase and use tax. Gov Hoff backs a $62.9 million highway bond plan to fund a major road program including bypasses for Rutland and Bennington. Rep. Lounsbury opposes the tax increases, citing a potential Bennington County trap, and proposes tabling the measure until highway construction bills pass. The plan aims to fund a $128.8 million road program and accelerate interstate and beltline projects, with votes expected by week’s end.
