Citizens Group Seeks Inventory Tax Repeal
Fletcher Manley of Chester led the Citizens Tax Committee in urging repeal or modification of Vermont’s inventory tax. The group argues the tax is unconstitutional and unfair since it taxes stocks on hand as of April 1, affecting businesses with large inventories less than those with smaller holdings. They plan to protest April payments and may pursue court action if the 1963 General Assembly does not deliver relief. The Vermont Farm Bureau backs replacing personal property tax with a sales tax, exempting many farm tools and materials.
