Pentagon plan projects 150000 troops in Vietnam in 1972
Defense officials circulated a budget guidance estimating more than 150,000 U S troops in Vietnam in the summer of 1972 with about 50,000 the following summer. The figure is not a firm withdrawal schedule though past guidance has aligned with actual force levels. Some planners say rapid reductions could follow a successful Laos operation. Details cover May 1 1971 to June 30 1972 and list remaining divisions and brigades attempting to outline a gradual drawdown.
