Two Mt Anthony skiers reach junior national cross country team
Peter Graves and Cheryl Cook of Mt Anthony Union High School earned junior national team spots after placing fourth of 32 and tenth at the USEASA Junior Championship in Putney. They depart from Logan Friday for western regionals in Bozeman Mont and nationals in Jackson Hole Wy with coach Steve Williams and Chummy Broomhall assisting. Funds raised locally by James Merunowicz at County National Bank, Graves is son of Van Vechten Graves and Cook is daughter of Thomas Cook.

Makarios Survives Cyprus Assassination Attempt
In Nicosia a 10,000 strong crowd supports President Makarios near the site of Sunday’s helicopter attack. Four of 14 suspects are freed, ten remanded for eight days as investigations continue. Gunmen from a high school roof fired on the helicopter, wounding the pilot Z. Papadogiannis. Makarios promised to carry on the struggle, while crowds, many from Ash Monday observances, demonstrated against the attack.

Guatemala frees two guerrillas in exchange for kidnapped envoy
Guatemalan authorities freed two jailed guerrillas Jose Manuel Aguirre Monzon and Vidalina Monzon Soto in exchange for the release of U.S. Second Secretary Sean Michael Holly. Holly, freed at 5 am Sunday, had been kidnapped Friday after his car was stopped. Kidnappers warned of more hostages but one of the four promised comrades had fled to Mexico and another was freed earlier in the week. Holly, 39, said the abductors masked him and forced him to a mountain hideout. after the exchange, the three freed captives were granted safe passage to Mexico. The incident followed prior attacks on U.S. diplomats in Guatemala and the August murder of Ambassador John Gordon Mein.

Mt Anthony Union High School sophomore Conrad Hoffman with Rick Humphreys used the Questar telescope to photograph Saturday's near total solar eclipse on Morgan Street. Despite cloudy skies the camera club members managed to record sun spots Hoffman notes the dark patches are sun spots, not film flaws.
