Earth house in Massachusetts withstands elements in style
The Clarke family in South Lee Massachusetts live in a rammed earth home built 25 years ago from compacted soil. The 1 inch thick walls sit on a cement and crushed rock foundation and required three summers of labor. The couple learned of rammed earth in 1947 and built the two story house with 4 inch soil layers tamped to rock density. They note minimal maintenance and that while warm in winter claims are exaggerated, insulation is limited. They advocate Cinva Ram blocks as a newer option and provide government resources for further study.
