Soviet visitors challenge myths at Kishinev US exhibit
Soviet attendees at a Moldavian Republic outdoor recreation show question why black Americans own cars and how the United States works. Cheryl Douglas, Georgetown student and the exhibit’s only black guide, demonstrates the car snapshot as she explains U.S. policy on ownership. Guides describe exhausting, ongoing discussions with residents who know the United States mainly through state press and who seek broad comparisons to Soviet life.
