Space Center Houston reports the Moon lander nicknamed Spider docked with Apollo 9 after a 112000 mile simulated lunar takeoff test. Commanders James McDivitt and Rusty Schweickart guided the craft through multiple orbits, testing descent and ascent engines and docking procedures for a potential future lunar flight.
In Montpelier the Pavilion Hotel won a temporary lease on life after a 17 to 13 Senate vote preserving the 94 year old hotel. Senate President Pro Tem Edward Janeway and Institutions Chairman Olin Gay led the effort despite a 4-2 committee adverse report. The bill seeks 229000 to restore the exterior as a first step toward full renovation with a larger goal of 22 million if both chambers pass later.
The Vermont Senate approved a crime control bill by 22 votes to 8 after heavy amendments. It tightens penalties for concealed weapons with intent to harm, clarifies loitering statutes, and aligns state law with federal gun possession rules while carving out exceptions for hunting and outdoor activities.
R Marshall Witten of Bennington Vermont urged a sales tax at the Bennington Rotary Club luncheon. He warned of a 19 million dollar gap between projected expenditures and revenues for 1970 and said no significant cuts would be possible in the general fund budget, with a March 14 submission expected.
The Soviet Union charged Communist Chinese soldiers with blood curdling atrocities after a border clash on the Usuri river. Moscow reported 31 Soviet deaths and 14 injuries with many mutilated by bayonets. China’s casualties were unknown but believed about 30. A massive protest marched to the Peking Embassy while officials issued a firm note demanding an end to hostile actions.
House leaders expected a 3 percent general sales tax bill to pass the chamber on a firm 82 to 68 tally based on a Kennedy nose count. The Ways and Means panel backed the measure to raise 19.7 million dollars for 1970 with a plan to exclude food, drugs, farm feeds, and production inputs, and to offer a sliding scale tax rebate for low income families. Democrats planned strong opposition and Republicans faced pressure from Gov. Davis allies to contact undecided lawmakers. Kennedy warned no amendments from Republicans and anticipated Senate edits to be made.
