IRS rescinds ITT tax ruling enabling Hartford merger
The IRS revoked a 1969 tax ruling that allowed ITT to acquire Hartford Insurance in a .5 billion merger, a move tied to a tax free gain for shareholders. The reversal, linked to Watergate fallout and a similar court ruling, could expose ITT stockholders to deferred capital gains taxes and jeopardize the merger structure.

U S and France edge toward clash over Europe alliance
UPI reports senior American officials warn of a potential confrontation with France that could fracture European unity and the Atlantic alliance. The debate centers on France shaping Europe against the United States while France expects 250,000 American troops to stay as a shield, risking a split among Western European states if pressed. Meanwhile Ethiopian workers mount a general strike in Addis Ababa demanding 200 percent raises and labor reforms, with university students marching in support before riot police intervene.
