Prime Minister Ian Smith pushed through a controversial bill to relax racial laws in Rhodesia, winning a two thirds majority 44 to 12. The measure ends most land ownership restrictions for blacks and marks a pivotal step toward an internal majority rule settlement, with six of sixteen black MPs voting yes and ten abstaining. Two sickbed supporters were carried in to vote, including Mines Minister Ian Dillon and backbencher Jack Christie.
