Ford budget dooms WIC funds in Vermont
Vermont Health Commissioner Anthony Robbins warns President Ford’s budget would end the WIC program, which served over 16 000 women and infants this year with federal funds of 3.8 million dollars. The program provides free cereal milk eggs cheese formula and juice to pregnant or nursing women and young children meeting income guidelines. Robbins notes preliminary studies show anemia improvement among participants but effects on infant mortality and prematurity remain unclear. Legislation is being drafted to preserve WIC in Vermont.
