Pownal residents misread a Banner headline claiming the board seeks 18 thousand more in the budget. Superintendent Catherine Corcoran clarified that the total remains 385,955 with 18,181 available from reallocated funds and state aid to hire two fulltime and one half time teachers. Voters will decide at Town Meeting.
Washington reports that HEW approved California to begin a one year experiment in Reagan's welfare plan. 30,000 recipients in 35 counties will be required to register for work or lose benefits. 80 hours monthly work with no extra pay, jobs include schoolyard monitoring and park maintenance.
Members of the Elks meet with FO Eagles Sunday at 1 PM in the Raples rooms for the third practice week of the dart tournament. Friends of the dart shooters are welcome. The FOE Eagles series 185 dinner and dance Saturday at the Eagles rooms features roast pork dinner 1.50 and dancing 9 to 1 with music by George O'Brien Jim O'Brien and Jesse Moon.
