Depot Native Brings Home Sales Tax Facts

Frederick Reed, former Attorney General and son of Reginald Reed, spoke in Manchester to defend Governor Deane Davis proposed sales tax plan. He outlined Vermont’s fiscal crisis, noting state budgets rising from 32 to 96 million and welfare costs swelling, while detailing projected revenues from a four percent sales tax, two percent land transfer tax, five percent corporate income tax, and a 10 percent income tax surcharge to balance the Hoff-era deficits. He said the plan would reach needed revenue in 4 1/2 years, with exemptions for food and medicines, and noted the audience of about 25 at Manchester Elementary School.
