NASA's Plum Brook wind turbine, a 100 kilowatt prototype costing about 1 million dollars, has operated less than 30 hours since installation. Experts cite high capital cost about 10,000 per kilowatt, reliability issues, and wind speed needs, with NASA planning a 1.5 megawatt follow up and two smaller Plum Brook installations while redesigns for blades and tower are tested.
