Vermonters built farms on 7000 acres of pasture in Arlington era
Arlington historian John Page told the Arlington Historical Society that from 1770 to 1810 Vermont agriculture was subsistence based with potash as the main cash crop. Sheep farming drove a boom that saw 12,000 sheep in Arlington and 6,000 to 7,000 acres of pasture, plus 900 cattle and 200 horses. The railroad ended the boom, shifting focus to dairying and cheese. Modern threats include booming land values and uncertain farm viability. Page also mused that Remember Baker might be a rival to Ethan Allen, and noted Sandgate’s overlooked potential in Bennington County.
