Cyprus Crisis Deepens Over Grivas Demand for Self Determination

British officials warned that Gen George Grivas demands for self determination could push Cyprus toward enosis and provoke Turkish intervention. Paris and London peace efforts continued as Makarios sought French mediation and Papandreou and Inonu returned from Washington-bound talks. Grivas, who returned secretly on June 12, addressed a 10 000 strong rally.

Lodge Hints He Will Seek Eisenhower Aid For Scranton

Washington reports indicate Henry Cabot Lodge, recently resigning as ambassador to Saigon, will urge former President Dwight D. Eisenhower to back Gov. William Scranton’s GOP bid. Lodge, speaking privately after a Johnson briefing, said he has not yet contacted Eisenhower but will soon and plans to call Scranton from the Metropolitan Club. He stressed he seeks non impulsive Republican candidates and noted the war in Vietnam should not drive campaign issues.

Cease Fire in Laos Demanded in Five-Nation Note

A five nation communique issued in London and Vientiane urged a Laos cease fire and the withdrawal of Communist forces from seized positions.
