Viking 1 Mars landing delayed to safer site
In Pasadena NASA scientists scrubbed the July 4 Viking 1 lander touchdown after Mars proved uncooperative. A new safer site near the Chryse plain, likely Northwest Territory, will push the landing back by days or weeks. Lander must avoid boulders and steep slopes as cameras cannot resolve small hazards from 1000 miles up. Project manager James Martin stressed getting the automated lab on Mars in working order remains the priority.
