Lightning strikes crash of Eastern Airlines 727 at Kennedy

An Eastern Airlines 727 from New Orleans crashed on landing at Kennedy Airport in heavy rain and lightning. Witnesses described a lightning strike moments before the jet somersaulted and exploded, killing 109 of 123 aboard and leaving 14 survivors. NTSB sent a 10 member team to investigate while authorities surveyed the wreckage and casualties.

Hall-Murray re elected as Bennington voters approve school budget

Incumbents won in Bennington as Hall and Murray kept Mt Anthony Union seats and three BSD candidates ran unopposed. A $2 410 166 budget passed by 1 635 yes to 767 no with absentee ballots influencing totals.

Work begins today Selectmen okay water contract

Bennington selectmen awarded Gene Bilodeau the engineering contract for design and supervision of a $2.144 million water system project including a new filtration plant for Bolles Brook and a three million gallon tank near Chapel Road. Bilodeau will likely have design ready for a bond vote next Town Meeting, with about 90 percent funded by state and federal sources. John Scheaffer of Bauer Scheaffer Lear was invited to visit with town and state officials. DuBois and King will cover $500 for his travel.

Democrats fail to override Ford housing veto vote

House Democrats expected to fall about 32 votes short of a two thirds margin to override President Ford’s veto of a 1.35 billion housing bill. Speaker Carl Albert urged votes, calling critics of the measure, including Rep. Thomas Ashley, turkey remarks. Ford cited a large deficit and announced 2 billion in GNMA mortgage purchases with requests to raise authority, aiming to stimulate a depressed housing market.

Ford cites comeback of Republican Party

Shaftsbury Man Drowns In Walloomsac River

Gerald E. Cook 20 of Shaftsbury died after entering the Walloomsac River near Route 67 Tuesday afternoon. His body was recovered in eight feet of water by Greylock Divers Association divers. Companion Joseph Bourne 19 attempted rescue. Cook born August 2 1954 in Peru was a Mt Anthony High School graduate and member of St John the Baptist Church. He leaves several half siblings and a paternal grandparent.
