Downtown renewal work starts on Bennington Pennysaver building

A downtown renewal project began with the Pennysaver building facade removal. Plans call for a cleaned wall or repainting, a new sign, cornice, and a canvas awning. The 1870 Italian Renaissance Revival structure, once Bennington County Courthouse, is by an unknown designer.

Skinner labels Salmon unwitting ally of oil firms

Vermont Democratic Senate hopeful Scott Skinner charged Gov. Thomas Salmon with being an unwitting ally of large oil companies over energy policy. Skinner criticized Salmon as misinformed, ignorant of political ramification, and aligned with oil interests on deregulation, synthetic fuels, and nuclear power while favoring conservation. He defended no new federal gun laws, favored local action, and supported gradual Panama Canal disengagement.

Burns criticizes Hackel as negative Democrat candidate

Lt. Gov. Brian Burns, a Democrat, said in Montpelier that Stella Hackel runs the most negative campaign in the gubernatorial race. He questioned her Democrat credentials, urged clearer welfare positions, and called Snelling’s no new taxes pledge irresponsible. Burns named Madeleine Kunin campaign chair.

Leahy opposes Vermont military flight ban

Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont says he is totally opposed to any ban on military flights over Vermont. He notes Vermont’s defense role, cites past crashes at Plattsburgh Air Force Base, and mentions two nonfatal accidents including a Feb. 3, 1975 collision near Londonderry and a June 7 crash near New Haven.

Inflation accelerates as cost of living rises in May

The Labor Department reports a 0.6 percent rise in the May cost of living, pushing the annual inflation rate to 7.2 percent. Food and gasoline drove the increase, while mortgage rates fell for the first time since October, and real spendable earnings rose 1.2 percent.
