The indomitable Stanley Steamer showcased its snub nose during a Bennington tour last Wednesday drawing antique car owners from across the country for a week in Williamstown Massachusetts. A stop at the Bennington Museum offered visitors an impressive display of Stanley Steamers lined up outdoors attracting curious crowds.
In Montpelier Vermont Governor Thomas P Salmon and Republican rival Walter L Kennedy faced questions over a supposed gentlemen’s agreement not to politicize rising electricity rates. Initially both denied a pact, then Kennedy clarified it was only to avoid making the Hoff Kennedy Electrical Energy Commission a political football.
The government reports the Consumer Price Index rose 1.1 percent in May led by sharp gains in fresh fruits and vegetables as well as higher prices for used cars, gasoline and household services. Prices compared with a year ago show large increases across food fuels and services.
Partly sunny today with a chance of showers and a high in the upper 60s to 70s. Expect more showers tonight. Sunday’s high will be in the mid 60s to low 70s.
MONTPELIER UPI Gov. Thomas Salmon denies plans to purge the PSB staff after resignations of Chairman William Gilbert and Commissioner Richard Norton. Deputy PSB chief Richard de Grasse says the governor stated no purge and he feels more comfortable. He warns firing the three nonclassified PSB lawyers would nearly kill the board while noting possible new chairman names are being considered.
High Court to hear July 8 arguments on whether courts can force Nixon to turn over 64 more White House tapes as part of a dispute with Special Prosecutor Leon Jaworski over impeachment evidence. St Clair argues executive privilege shields tapes. Jaworski says disclosure is needed for a potential impeachment and trial. The dispute centers on executive power versus congressional inquiry and whether the House alone may pursue impeachment evidence.
Washington UPI report notes the White House refused comment on Charles Colson’s claim that Nixon ordered smear tactics against Daniel Ellsberg. Colson testified during sentencing for obstructing the Ellsberg break in while Nixon rested at Camp David for his upcoming Moscow and Brussels meetings. Gerald Warren, the president’s spokesman, insisted there would be no comment on court proceedings and criticized leaks to undermine Nixon.
Vice President Gerald Ford called for Charles Colson to face an open televised hearing before the House Judiciary Committee to reiterate allegations about President Nixon in the Ellsberg case. Ford spoke during a KTTV tape in Los Angeles and urged exposing Colson and John Dean to the public.
Bennington School District voters face a June 25 bond election to fund a $1.5 million Catamount Elementary complex purchase and renovation. The plan would acquire the Catamount property and convert it to a K through sixth grade campus, with debt costs shown as a $21,000 first year increase.
