A major fire leveled the Go-Round, once the Merry-Go-Round and Old Byars House, at Route 67 in North Hoosick New York. Four firefighters were lightly injured. damage estimated at 125000 dollars. Cause is under official review. Fire department alerted at 650 am by a neighbor.
Indonesia’s top constitutional authority unanimously granted army chief Lt. Gen. Suharto broad powers to govern until elections restore democracy. The MPRS confirmed Sukarno’s March 11 order delegating unlimited authority to Suharto, averting a return of full powers to Sukarno. Nasution may be elected permanent chairman. Sukarno dismissed Nasution on Feb. 21 after a failed pro Communist coup.
Defense Secretary Robert S. McNamara voiced optimism about NATO adjustments required by France's Charles de Gaulle, saying changes would not disable allied defenses and could reduce U.S. costs. He told the Senate subcommittee that the United States will not weaken its European combat capability or pull major units from the 7th Army, and warned against bickering among allies while deeming debate over France’s sovereign prerogatives unhelpful. The testimony occurred before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
Two Marine A6 intruder jets collided during a training run near Hampton Virginia. One jet crashed into Buckroe Beach causing a firestorm that killed a 30 year old mother and her 19 month old son and injured 41 others. The second plane fell into Chesapeake Bay without further damage. Parachuting crew members were rescued by Coast Guard helicopters. Authorities identified the victims as Mrs. Mary Gallant and her son Donald. The pilots were 1st Lt James Engstrom and 1st Lt Charles Clark. bombardier navigators Capt James Anderst and 2nd Lt William Lewellyn. Fire crews battled fires all night amid debris and gas line ruptures.

French President Charles de Gaulle met Soviet Premier Kosygin President Podgorny and Foreign Minister Gromyko for three hours in Moscow to discuss a Franco Soviet partnership free from U S influence. They planned continued political talks as de Gaulle's 11 day visit proceeds.
Premier Ky’s police took Thich Tri Quang back to Saigon as a prisoner. Nuns in Hue protested briefly before police carried them to their pagoda. Quang, angered by Johnson’s support for Ky, began a 14 day hunger strike and refused to talk. The siege of Vien Hoa Dao pagoda continued, with monks and civilians inside enduring food shortages. The uprising had largely collapsed.
Several contests for seats on the new Bennington merged district board are set as four more announced candidates file nominating petitions. The seven directors will be chosen at the district's first annual meeting July 12, with terms of three, two, and one years. Among new declarations are Mrs D Fay Morgan two year term and four undecided candidates including John W Miller Henry E White Anthony Pello.
