The Bennington Water Board on Monday voted to recommend to selectmen adding sodium hydroxide at 10 pounds daily to the town water to curb lead leaching, while continuing bicarbonate. They favored combining chemicals to raise pH to about 8.5 and form lead carbonate as a pipe coating, but voiced concerns about caustic substance effects, sodium levels for high blood pressure, and uneven distribution. Town Manager Savelas said federal funds would be sought for pipe removal, with selectmen to decide tonight.
