Democrats seek amity with Soviets in platform draft
A Democratic Platform Committee subcommittee approved a draft calling for cooperation with the Soviet Union while preserving a strong U.S. military deterrent. It also favors reducing defense spending to about 7 billion and a general pardon for Vietnam War resisters. The plan emphasizes middle-ground positions across energy foreign policy economy health welfare cities and education. The draft faces further review at the Mayflower Hotel and at the national convention in New York next month.
