Gov. William W. Scranton of Pennsylvania seeks to peel away Goldwater delegates ahead of the Republican National Convention. The moderate candidate would rally anti-Goldwater Republicans who fear a Goldwater ticket could hurt GOP chances against President Johnson and hurt down-ballot races.
President Johnson and West German Chancellor Erhard said the Soviet East German treaty cannot alter Western rights in West Berlin or undermine the three Western powers. They issued a joint communique stressing Western access to Berlin remains unimpeded and Germany must be unified under a freely elected government. Erhard signaled no shocking elements but urged a clear Western response and noted increased aid to South Vietnam.
