Byrd Eyes Switch To GOP
Washington reports speculate that Virginia senator Harry Flood Byrd Jr. may switch from the Democratic to the Republican Party as he faces the 1970 re election bid. Observers note Byrd’s independence, yet his record leans toward the GOP and a coalition with Republicans could reshape Virginia politics. Conference rumors mount as a New Year’s Day decision looms.
