Bennington Program Ends First Year With Fall Wilderness Trip
The Bennington Program wraps its first year at Cape Cod with a week in the woods to reflect on the year. Of 22 boys, seven will not return, including Ken Kennard who plans to take the High School Equivalency Test for a potential four year Johnson State College scholarship. Fifteen students will stay, receive 325 dollars for the year with 150 kept as a commitment. Fifteen upcoming junior-high participants will be recruited to boost enrollment. Directors plan a 1971 72 start with a Canada wilderness canoe trip spanning six to eight thousand square miles, food drops planned at two crossing points, and a possible December play by Tony Krulikowski about the program. Ralph Wright emphasizes attitude as key to rapport and notes the trips offer break from daily class routine and may continue with several more trips after December.
