Left leads in crucial Turkish election race in Istanbul
With 57 percent counted, Bulent Ecevit's Republican People's Party held 136 seats to 105 for Suleman Demirel's Justice Party in the 450 seat National Assembly. Istanbul voters backed Ecevit over the Justice Party by more than two to one as turnout remained high nationwide. Observers warned margins could shift with rural results. Economic woes, inflation, and unemployment frame the contest while foreign policy tensions with Greece and Cyprus loom large. Assassination attempts against Ecevit added to the charged climate.
