Beagles mark 74 years of marriage in quiet Beagle country

Edmund and Helen Beagle, aged 95 and 92, celebrated their 74th wedding anniversary on May 27. They married in 1902 in South Shaftsbury, now living in Sunderland. Beagle recalled meeting at the Manchester Fair around 1901, runs three gardens, keeps bees yielding 75 to 100 pounds of honey annually, and restored a Stanley Steamer bought for a symbolic dollar. He uses an electronic larynx after losing his voice box. Their life spans across Shaftsbury, Sunderland, and New Britain, Connecticut, with two sons Harold and Hoffman.

Firecracker ban limits Chinese devices nationwide

The Consumer Product Safety Commission ordered a ban on firecrackers larger than the “ladyfinger” size, effective 180 days after Federal Register publication. The rule prohibits any device with more than 50 milligrams of powder, targeting one and one-half inch fireworks while larger items remain illegal. Safety labeling and construction rules accompany the move, despite religious and cultural objections from some groups. The measure, opposed by safety advocates calling for a total ban, aims to curb risk during upcoming celebrations without hindering commercial displays.
