Southern governors fear McGovern can doom the party

Democratic governors from southern and border states warned that Senator George S. McGovern’s positions on defense spending cuts and a federal minimum income could spark a Democratic defeat. Jimmy Carter of Georgia said McGovern’s platform would be disaster for southern candidates, while Gov. Wendell Ford of Kentucky echoed fears and hinted at backing an alternative such as Muskie or Humphrey.
