Snelling comments fuel fears over Route 7 funds

Cuba Frees 10 Americans as Envoy Pact Reached
The United States and Cuba agreed to exchange envoys for the first time since 1961. Fidel Castro released 10 Americans from Cuban jails as part of an envoy accord that falls short of full diplomatic restoration. U.S. spokesmen cautioned against exaggerating the gesture, calling it an initial step toward normal relations. The pact allows a small diplomatic presence in Havana and Washington under Swiss and Czechoslovak auspices, with envoys handling mutual concerns while full ties remain paused.

Longer work week may cut Montpelier lunch hour sales
Montpelier merchants fear a 40 hour week for state employees, moving hours into the lunch period and reducing noontime sales. The change, tied to a 16.6 percent pay raise, awaits details on where extra hours will be added. A labor board hearing on who sets the schedule is pending, and an unfair labor practice charge claims the change is negotiable.
