Outward Bound on Hurricane Island Teaches Survival and Solitude

About 1,000 people will join an Outward Bound program in Maine this summer, learning marine survival, then spending days alone on a remote island with minimal tools and no food. For 600 dollars, participants from diverse backgrounds endure a three day solo challenge after a week of group training led by U.S. Coast Guard certified instructors. The program, begun in Wales in World War II, emphasizes self evaluation and contemplation in a wilderness setting. Local staff include 90 instructors and guides, with operations on Hurricane Island, once a granite quarry hub, now hosting the course and related sailing training. Three Vermonters earned academic honors at Vermont Technical College in Randolph.
