Tree planting set for fall on Bennington Main Street
Bennington Selectmen heard from Extension Agent John C. Page that sidewalk trees will thrive and backed a Main Street beautification plan. The six member board pledged to pursue private funding, postpone the first planting to next fall, and consider 30 trees of little linden and flowering crab along Main Street from Four Corners to Silver Street.

ABC program approved here for 10 Indian girls
Jubilant supporters celebrate a Tucker Fund grant of 15000 dollars plus a 6000 dollar travel allowance for the ABC program at Mount Anthony Union High School in North Bennington. Ten American Indian girls from Arizona Michigan and Washington will join, with two resident directors and two live-in tutors. They will live in a large Mechanic Street house leased from Mrs. Towart. Local students will join a remedial program at Dartmouth this summer and later study with the Indian girls in evening sessions.

Army charges brigadier general with murder in Vietnam
Brig. Gen. John W. Donaldson faced charges of murdering six South Vietnamese civilians and assaulting two others during 1968 to 1969 while commanding the 11th Infantry Brigade Americal Division. Lt. Col. William J. McCloskey also faced murder charges for deaths in March 1969 in the same province.

Nixon warns Moscow Cairo pact could imperil Middle East peace
President Nixon cautioned the Soviet Union against letting its Moscow Cairo treaty touch off a new arms race that could threaten peace in the Middle East. He said a weapons buildup would jeopardize the chances for peace while continuing to seek a negotiated settlement. He discussed China at the UN, prisoners of war, heroin addiction, and troop reductions in Europe during a 30 minute White House briefing. He noted a White House panel favored admitting Mainland China to the UN and pledged a June 10 release of a broad list of nonstrategic goods for trade with China. He said a long path remains to closer ties with Beijing.
