Balloons Signal Nuclear Protest at Easton Site
About 2,000 helium balloons were released by the Bennington area Committee for Survival near a former nuclear site on the Hudson at Easton New York. Nearly 200 spectators watched as three colored balloons symbolized radioactive isotopes strontium krypton and iodine. The event warned of fast breeder reactor risks and potential environmental spread of radioactivity. Dr Irving Lyon, a Bennington College biologist, cautioned that balloon count does not map to accident likelihood and that fallout depends on isotope type half-life and diet impacts. Vermonters face a statewide election to decide if Vermont will hold a constitutional convention in October to review major changes to the 192 year old document. The vote asks if a convention should be held and seven optional items for consideration including court ordered reapportionment four year terms for top state offices removal of the time lock and a new district court system.

Where and When To Vote Locally
Referendum voting will run from 10 am to 7 pm in Bennington. All residents vote at Bennington Elementary School except those on the North Bennington check list who vote in the fire house there. Other towns use regular polling places. If approved the convention plan would elect 180 delegates in September and they would convene October 6 at the State House to consider seven proposed changes.
