Erskine Childers won Ireland's presidency as the first Protestant elected in the mainly Catholic republic. He pledges a mission of conciliation to bridge Protestant Catholic tensions in Northern Ireland and seeks cross community talks. He defeated Tom O'Higgins 636,162 to 587,577 and will serve seven years.

Delta County Deputy Sheriff Dennis Murphy of Garden Michigan 25 charged with the murder of his wife Janet 20 and sons Randy 2 and Robbie 7 months after a house fire. He was found shackled to a tractor near the town hall and a threatening message was found. Authorities say no motive yet and no other suspects. Murphy a Vietnam veteran and Northern Michigan University police graduate had served as a special deputy sheriff and was not county paid.

Convicts fatally stab warden and deputy in prison attack
In Holmesburg Prison a grievance hearing between Black Muslim inmates and officials erupted in violence. Warden Patrick Curran and Deputy Warden Robert Fromhold died from chest stab wounds. Capt. Leroy Taylor survived with injuries. Inmates Joseph Bowen and Fred Burton were subdued after the assault and faced serious injuries. Police deployed 250 officers and 20 K-9s. 1,200 inmates were searched and returned to cells. Bowen and Burton had prior convictions related to police killings.
