New Memorial Day Marker Dedicated
A small crowd gathered for Memorial Day observances as four bands and several marching units paraded down Main Street. Gold Star Mothers placed wreaths at Putnam Square and scattered flowers on Putnam Bridge for fallen Marines and Navy personnel. Judge George M. Fienberg spoke at the Vermont Soldiers' Home urging reflection on those who died defending liberty at home and abroad. Edward Myers age 45 was burned on face and hands in a gasoline explosion while burning rubbish in an old Shaftsbury cellar hole across U.S. 7 from Red Brick School. He was admitted in fair to good condition at Putnam Memorial Hospital. Windows were blown in at Red Brick School which was unoccupied. Patricia Dorsey of Saratoga Springs was treated for a fractured hip after a separate weekend fall and transferred to a Saratoga hospital.
