OAS votes to end Cuba sanctions and hold self-rule

The Organization of American States approved a Mexican sponsored measure ending the 11 year embargo era by letting member nations determine their relations with Cuba. The United States joined 15 others in a 16 to 3 vote with two abstentions, stopping short of full sanctions lifting.

Ford Brezhnev mini summit on nuclear arms in Helsinki

President Ford and Soviet chief Leonid Brezhnev held a two hour and ten minute private talk on strategic arms limits and praised a constructive tone. They attended the 35 nation ground rules conference and expressed hope the talks would boost peace and security in Europe and worldwide.

Corcoran Objects as Bennington Day Care Funds Released

Bennington Selectmen voted to pay the Day Care Center its $18,000 appropriation for the fiscal year despite Tim Corcoran’s push for a board explanation of finances. Center officials defended funds including a $3470.57 savings and $857.97 in checking as prudent, noting a goal to reserve for a van and that 45 children are served at an annual cost of about $66,000.

Veterans' aid review at Southern Vermont College

The Veterans Administration is surveying colleges including Southern Vermont College to verify veterans enrolled with VA benefits actually completed courses and used funds properly. President James Donahue says issues are nationwide and may reflect outdated procedures or misinterpretations of VA rules. If VA funding is withheld after Sept 1, the college will help students find alternative aid and duplicate records will be sent to expedite the review.

Unsecured creditors fear Mount Snow lawsuit

Five unsecured creditors of Mount Snow Development Corp filed a suit threatening to topple the ski area. The Deerfield Valley Chamber of Commerce held a meeting to quell rumors as Mount Snow pledges to contest. Mount Snow seeks transfer of the case from Burlington to New York, with Okuraya-Davos as parent. The creditors committee, representing nearly 300, has not pushed for bankruptcy.
