Apollo astronauts Thomas Stafford Vance Brand and Deke Slayton will be released from Tripler Army Medical Center in Hawaii and stay on the islands at least 10 more days to recover from lung irritation and to avoid exposure to respiratory diseases. Doctors said nitrogen tetroxide fumes during return flight caused lung inflammation and immunities remain low, but Slayton in particular has shown fantastic recovery.
Vermont retailers seek moratorium clarification as Sunday bans on nonessential items lead to strict enforcement. Shoppers report blocked aisles for items from clothespins to charcoal while officials consider exemptions and common sense enforcement.

The United States posted its largest monthly trade surplus in history in June with exports exceeding imports by 1.74 billion dollars, marking a fifth straight black month and 5.4 billion dollars for the first half of the year.
The United States halted operations at four bases in Turkey while keeping 21 others active. Turkey ordered all but Incirlik closed in retaliation for the U.S. arms embargo, with debate in Washington over preserving the bases. Bennington police report a 1968 Plymouth Road Runner driven by 17 year old Timothy A. Richards of Shaftsbury failed to negotiate a curve on West Road. In South Royalton Vermont 17 South Vietnamese refugees work for Forest Poultry Corp with little official awareness or support. They earn about 2.10 dollars an hour, live in crowded company housing, and send money back home while awaiting contact with families left in Vietnam. The Tolstoy Foundation aided the move, but state officials say they found out only recently. The workers hope for further help as the plant struggles to expand beyond its 60 workers.
Central Vermont Public Service Corp announced a $170,000 ripple control system to regulate electricity use during off peak hours. The nation’s first such system injects a control signal over power lines and uses receivers in homes and businesses to switch appliances on or off, aiding peak load management. The two year experiment involves 200 customers with $70 receiver cost and $2 monthly fees plus wiring costs.
