State Environment Chief Backs Pownal Plant Appeal

Vermont environment chief Robert Williams said the state should ease rules for a $7.2 million tissue mill on the Hoosic River in Pownal. He spoke on WCAX ahead of a hearing where Spruce Paper Co. appeals Bennington Regional Environmental Commission directives on water quality, air pollution and transmission lines. Governor Davis also questioned the strict standards, urging balance between jobs and pollution as the firm appeals the ruling.

River Basins Group Seeks Vermont Water Priorities

Salazar Dies at 81, Portugal’s Dictator

Antonio de Oliveira Salazar, Portugal’s long time premier, died at 81 after a stroke and heart attack. He led Portugal for 36 years until his fall in 1968, shaping a regime known for rigid economic restraint and limited reforms while keeping the country isolated from much of Western Europe. Born April 28, 1889, in Santa Comba Dao, he rose from modest roots to helm the Estado Novo until his stroke ended his rule.

Ottinger accuses NY of concealing Lake Ontario mercury risk
