Apollo 15 Launch Opens Moon Mission Era

Apollo 15 blasted off from Cape Kennedy aboard a Saturn 5 at 9 34 a m EDT, beginning a 12 day mission with Col. David R Scott as commander and Maj. Alfred Worden and Lt. Col. James Irwin aboard the Endeavour. The crew aims for a lunar surface landing near Apennine mountains, driving a $8 million lunar rover to map and study, while Worden photographs and sensors map 1 8 of the Moon from 69 miles up. Scientists urge halt on nuclear plant licenses after safety concerns

Four members of the Union of Concerned Scientists warned that emergency cooling systems may fail in a major reactor accident, calling for an immediate halt to new licenses and a comprehensive review of safety measures. The group cited 1957 and 1970 71 tests showing potential core meltdown risks and urged a national program to develop reliable protection against loss of coolant. Town pool to reopen after dead fish scare

The town pool off Kocher Drive will reopen Tuesday at 9 with boosted chlorine after several dead fish were found in the filter bed. Officials said there is no danger and water tests were shipped to Montpelier for analysis.

Corrections chief Bershad weighs out-of-state job offer
